As part of their CAS program, DP students engaged in a thought-provoking debate on the topic: “Should access to the internet be considered a basic human need?”
The event offered students the opportunity to step into the roles of speakers and analysts, honing their critical thinking, argumentation, and teamwork skills.
Arguments in favor:
- Educational tool: The internet provides access to knowledge, personal development opportunities, and helps bridge educational gaps.
- Technological reliance: In today’s world, lack of internet access can lead to social and professional exclusion.
- Democracy and free speech: The internet empowers individuals by providing access to information and a platform to express opinions.
Arguments against:
- Addiction risks: The internet can contribute to dependency issues.
- Privacy concerns: It poses significant challenges to personal data security.
- Infrastructure costs: In developing countries, making internet access universal is a major financial challenge.
- Basic priorities: Access to essentials like water, food, and healthcare should come first.
The debate was dynamic, insightful, and respectful, with students demonstrating excellent preparation and the ability to critically analyze global challenges.
A big thank you to all participants and organizers for fostering such an inspiring exchange of ideas!
